All changes in Ingrid

The running record of features, improvements and fixes. See What’s new for major additions, or Ingrid through the years for screenshots.

Earlier entries are reconstructed from surviving source records. Development dates describe when work was added; release labels identify confirmed public versions. The older record is not a complete list of every fix.

Complete screenshot previews

· Website development

Historical screenshots and the diagram preview fit the page without a separate scrollbar. Open an image or its full-size link to inspect the original.

The inventory example shows five records and three columns so it fits the desktop reading column. Native grid examples can still scroll on narrow screens to keep their text readable.

Sharper interface illustrations

· Web 0.1.133

Nine HTML illustrations explain the workspace, Inspector, Find, Open Grid, backups, Docs search, Navigate and Edit, and Saved and Synced. Their text stays sharp when you zoom or resize the page.

The workspace example shows two grids, four tabs and three panes. What’s new now illustrates 25 of its 31 major milestones; All changes keeps the detailed record. Historical captures retain their original interfaces.

Visual Docs, search and a Home link

· Web 0.1.132

The homepage shows a reading journal in three panes, with separate examples explaining tabs, panes and views. What’s new pairs major additions with visual examples, before-and-after comparisons and links into the guide. Docs adds illustrated examples beside the instructions.

Help opens Docs directly in a separate tab. Search Docs finds topics and shortcuts. Select and Text keep their own toolbar entrances.

Home joins Docs, What’s new and Open Ingrid in the same top bar on every public page.

Saved and Synced

· Web 0.1.131

The footer pairs Saved with Synced. Both captions stay fixed; their icons, tooltips and accessible status describe pending work, offline use or problems.

The homepage introduces tabs and panes. Public pages share the same navigation, with major additions here, a detailed running record and screenshots from earlier Ingrid versions.

Tabs, panes and views

· Web 0.1.130

Keep several grids open in one workspace. Arrange them in tabs and panes, or use New View to work on an overview and its details together.

Views of one grid share edits and Undo, with their own focus and folds. Tabs, panes, focus and folds return on reload. Layout stays on this device; optional Sync carries grid content between devices.

  • Rename Grid and Rename Tab separate the grid’s name from the name of a particular view.
  • Grid Details shows creation and save times, tile count, storage and Cloud Sync details. Its tabs keep the same panel size.
  • Saved stays a fixed caption while its badge and tooltip show saving, unsaved changes, errors or conflicts.
  • Shared commands wait for a restored tab’s grid to load, so they cannot act on the grid you just left.

Editing and older grids

· Web development

Replacing selected text and continuing to type can be undone in one step.

Older grids containing damaged retired zoom settings open correctly.

Sort compares cell contents as case-insensitive text: “item 10” comes before “item 2.”

Tabs, panes and windows on Desktop

· Desktop development

The Desktop workspace grows to support several grids, tabs, panes and windows. Views of the same grid share their document and editing history.

This is a private Desktop development milestone; it does not mark a public installer release.

Back up grids and their media

· Web development

Full Export packages grids and their image and audio assets in an .ingrid-backup.zip file. Full Import restores the archive and continues to accept older JSON backups.

This work is included in Web 0.1.130.

Save before updating

· Web development

Update notices offer Save and reload, checking drafts and saving before reloading. The action waits when work is unsettled.

Diagram editors distinguish loading failures from invalid source and offer another loading attempt.

Bring selection controls back

· Web development

Reopen dismissed selection controls with right-click or the keyboard context-menu command.

More reliable submenu targets

· Web development

Pointer targets around submenu disclosure arrows respond consistently.

Stable Grid Details tabs

· Web development

Grid Details separates Metadata, Appearance and Recovered content into tabs with local scrolling. The panel was called Current Grid in this version.

Find and account recovery

· Web development

Escape finishes Find and clears its query in both inline and panel presentations.

Account recovery remains available after failed billing requests, and sign-out retries clear stale errors.

Optional Sync account plans

· Web 0.1.116

Optional paid Cloud Sync becomes available, with a trial and account billing controls. Local editing remains free and needs no account.

Desktop Inspector windows

· Desktop development

The Desktop Inspector can open in a separate native window. This is private Desktop development, distinct from the browser popout.

A floating Inspector

· Web development

Keep the Inspector open in a floating panel while you work. Supported Chromium browsers can also place it in a separate picture-in-picture window; other browsers keep the floating panel.

Available by Web 0.1.114. Desktop window support follows on October 1.

Return to the Inspector

· Web development

Inspector controls remain usable after returning with the browser’s Back button.

Edit math without its preview

· Web development

Math source remains editable and saveable when the preview cannot load.

Review recovered changes

· Web development

Recovered changes opens a read-only preview of captured recovery data. Inspect it, copy a selection or export the recovered grid before deciding what to keep.

This is recovery for captured changes, not a permanent version archive. Available by Web 0.1.110.

Sync catches up

· Web development

Sync catches up after an out-of-date notification instead of waiting indefinitely for another update.

Find grids and understand import errors

· Web development

Open Grid searches descriptions as well as names, showing name matches first.

Backup import errors distinguish invalid files, unsupported versions and size limits.

Repeated sorting preserves the full selected range, including through Undo and Redo.

Talk provides a copyable bug-report starter with build and browser details. It sends nothing automatically and omits grid content and account credentials.

A library of example grids

· Web development

Open example grids to explore nested notes, structured plans and mixed content. Converted TreeSheets examples join the library.

The library browser was implemented by Web 0.1.109. It currently requires a configured download library and is hidden in the public app.

Keep source-editor drafts

· Web development

Code, Math and Diagram editors save drafts when clicking away or switching editors. Explicit Cancel and save-failure handling remain available.

Search commands in Help

· Web development

Searchable Help brought commands and keyboard shortcuts into a compact in-app reference.

It has since been replaced by searchable Docs. Help now opens that guide in a separate tab.

An editing-history experiment

· Web development

A popout for inspecting Undo and Redo steps was explored, then removed before Web 0.1.102. The ordinary Undo and Redo controls and bounded session stacks remain.

A compact interface and Inspector

· Web development

The toolbar, footer and Inspector are rebuilt around smaller grouped controls. Appearance controls and selectable themes sit alongside the grid without taking over the workspace.

This interface and searchable Help are available by Web 0.1.102.

Resize the Code editor in place

· Web development

Resizing a focused Code editor no longer shifts the whole workspace sideways.

Safer Copy and Cut

· Web development

A failed clipboard write preserves Cut’s source and the previous successful internal clipboard. Copy confirms success after the write completes.

Reuse tile appearance

· Web development

Copy and paste appearance between tiles, transfer it across a row, column, grid or nested tiles, or clear it without replacing the tile’s content.

Prepare rich content for printing

· Web development

Print preparation preserves images and avoids clipping long code blocks in the printed document.

Work with larger grids

· Web development

The editor mounts the visible portion of large grids instead of keeping every tile on screen. This reduces rendering work as documents grow.

Keep the latest checkbox choice

· Web development

Rapid to-do checkbox clicks retain the latest choice while text is saving.

Backspace edits text

· Web development

Backspace edits text without accidentally deleting selected tiles.

A homepage and user guide

· Web development

Ingrid gains its own public homepage and Docs, introducing nested grids, mixed content, structural editing and local storage.

Native Desktop documents

· Desktop development

Desktop moves to .ingrid documents backed by SQLite, with embedded media and checks for changes made by another writer.

This is private Desktop development, separate from browser storage and public Web releases.

Find inside folded grids

· Web development

Find reveals matches inside folded branches.

· Web development

Print the grid without application controls, flowing its content across pages. Later work improves preparation of images and long code blocks.

Reopen Ingrid offline

· Web development

A cached app shell lets a previously loaded Ingrid reopen offline. Locally saved grids remain available for editing without a connection.

Cloud Sync

· Production milestone

Optional Cloud Sync reaches production. Sign in with an email code to carry grid content between devices while keeping a local copy for offline work.

Export and restore your library

· Web development

Full Export backs up all locally stored grids and their media. Full Import can create missing grids or bring them in as copies.

Transpose, sort and fold

· Web development

Transpose exchanges rows and columns, recursive folding controls deeper branches, and row sorting reorganizes structured notes.

Find your place

· Web development

Find improves the presentation of ranked search results, while the minimap makes it easier to locate the current part of a grid. Search already existed in the April editor.

Diagrams in tiles

· Web development

Mermaid, Graphviz and Pikchr source can produce diagrams inside the grid. Diagrams join the existing text, code, math and media tile types.

Portable grids and media

· Web development

Grid import and export carry embedded media. File drop and paste make it easier to bring content into a grid without managing separate asset folders.

Richer text and tile appearance

· Web development

Rich text and more tile appearance controls extend the editor’s original background colors, giving related notes their own emphasis and presentation.

See what a fold contains

· Web development

Fold brackets show hidden-grid dimensions and counts.

Scrollbars, folds and search

· Web development

Scrollbar, fold and search presentation is refined in the new editor.

A two-way TreeSheets bridge

· Web development

TreeSheets XML export joins import, so text and nested grid structure can travel in both directions. The format does not preserve Ingrid’s specialized tile types.

Resize images

· Web development

Image tiles gain resizing controls.

Fold and wrap nested grids

· Web development

Fold nested grids and wrap a selection into a parent tile. Wrap works with whole grids, rows, columns and rectangular selections. Multiple tiles can change type or background color together.

Export a grid snapshot as JSON, or copy selections as plain text, HTML or Markdown.

Images, audio, code and to-dos

· Web development

To-dos, code, math, images, audio and video join text and headings. Media controls attach files or link to their sources.

Copy whole branches

· Web development

Copy, cut and paste structured selections while keeping their nested grids. TreeSheets XML import brings existing outlines into Ingrid.

The current editor begins

· Web development

A new editor foundation starts with editable nested grids, row and column operations, and Undo and Redo. It carries forward the nested-grid idea from the earlier Desktop work.

The early Desktop editor

· Desktop development

The early Desktop renderer combines nested grids, several tile types, structural actions, search and a minimap. The small colored action icons and grid-within-a-grid layout already point toward today’s Ingrid.

See the visual history for a restored capture from this source. This was development work, not a verified public release.

Back up external file conflicts

· Desktop development

When resolving an externally changed file, the legacy Desktop app saves a backup of the version being replaced.

Clipboard fixes and toolbar headings

· Desktop development

The legacy Desktop app fixes parsing of structured grid content copied through the clipboard.

Side toolbar groups gain visible vertical headings.

The earliest surviving source

· Source milestone

The preserved Desktop repository begins here. It is the earliest source record recovered for this history; it does not establish an original public launch date.
